Comfort Amidst the Wind

Comfort Amidst the Wind

One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's cross over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and started out. On the way across, Jesus lay down for a nap, and while he was sleeping the wind began to rise. A fierce storm developed that threatened to swamp them, and they were in real danger. The disciples woke him up, shouting, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" So Jesus rebuked the wind and the raging waves. The storm stopped and all was calm! Then he asked them, "Where is your faith?" And they were filled with awe and amazement. They said to one another, "Who is this man, that even the winds and waves obey him?" Luke 8:22-25

Where was Jesus 'on'… or Where was Jesus 'in' the midst of my problems?
This is a question that has been asked for generations.

I must confess that this is something that I have been asking quite frequently over the last few years and perhaps never more so than in the last few months and even today.  As a corps officer in my last appointment it seemed my calling was to officiate funerals and deal with tragedies within the homeless community

All of these events reminded me that mortality is real.  Perhaps the suddenness strength of the wind and raging water brought mortality to the forefront for the disciples.  Perhaps neither could they see an end to the tumultuous circumstance that was suddenly thrust upon them?  Perhaps you too may wonder about the circumstances of your life?

Like the disciples above, sometimes all we can see is the storm and the tumult in the midst of our lives.  Instead, let us exclaim as the disciples did, who is this man that even the winds and the waves obey Him?  If the wind and the waves obey HIM, can I do anything less? So when the storms of my life (and yours) seem insurmountable, let us also look to Jesus to bring comfort amidst the wind and the raging waves.

I will remember the words of Bonnie Wilson Daniels’ song:  Fly Like An Eagle.  “Lord lift me up on eagle’s wings, To fly away from earthly things, To rise above the sin and stress, To live in trust and blessedness.  Lord lift me up, lift me up high, …Give me faith and trust to lean on, Your truth to set me free, And then Yours forever I will be.”
